Indigo Highway is an evocative collection of prose poems, punctuated by line drawings that add a touch of playful interest to the work. Each poem creates a wonderful little picture of pain, decay, danger, and hope, united throughout by the author's unique style.
I was very impressed with this volume, and I hope Truman has more to show us in the future.
Conway Truman's debut poetry collection offers a broad range of the human spectrum. From the dark and dank images of self-imposed inferiority, to the elevated crafting of elation, each poem provides a detailed insight into a character's mind.
But these are not the base thoughts of a budding floral visionary. Truman's style defies traditional poetry in both context and form. Rather than highlighting some of the niceties of life, the artist starts with a black canvas and paints dark pictures on top, leaving his audience in a zone beyond life and death, harmony and discordance. All that resides in the world of 'Indigo Highway' is the dystopian vision of a distraught mind.
In form, too, 'Indigo Highway' breaks free of the common notion of positive and negative. The prosodic analysis provided in Truman's poems exists not in a basic format, but as a fluid list of melancholy anti-humour. One sentence breaks the reader into many shards, only to be stamped into dust by the full stanza.
Don't imagine that this is anything other than glorious, though. The whole collection creates such vivid images and stunning landscapes that we find it hard to imagine Truman existing in any world outside that of 'Indigo Highway'.
A stunning debut from a marvellous writer. I look forward to consuming everything he has to offer.
